(01)Green Woodpecker [Picus viridis]. 30-33cm in height, a bird of deciduous woodland, parks, and farmland, where it nests in excavated holes in trees between May and July. Only one brood each year, with usually 5-7 eggs. It feeds on both wood boring larvae and on the ground at ants' nests. Often heard before spotted, owing to a characteristic loud ringing 'laugh'. |
