Brimstone Butterfly - notes.
.....A slender greyish green caterpillar powdered with black specks and a whitish streak along its sides, feeds on buckthorn during June and July. It gives rise to a new generation of butterflies towards the end of July. The males are coloured bright sulphur yellow whereas the females are a paler more greenish yellow. One of our early spring butterflies, in fact it is often the first butterfly found on the wing after winter. It may be seen well into the autumn, when it seeks out a winter shelter to hibernate, usually amongst evergreen plants often against the side of a wall.
