The Aim

The friends of Compton Bishop Church is a trust formed to raise money exclusively for the maintenance, repair and improvement of St Andrew's Church, Compton Bishop and its churchyard. It also exists to encourage greater interest and involvement by all members of the community, whether churchgoing or not, in the splendid heritage of this ancient building.

The main task of the trustees is to pass on income as soon as possible. A capital fund has also been established to provide additional income from, gifts, legacies and bequests.

The Heritage

Compton Bishop church was consecrated by Bishop Jocelin in 1236 and represents, first and foremost, a tradition of continuous worship going back well over 700 years. It is also an essential part of our community's history and a fine building. It is with us now because it has been cared for for generations. Help us to preserve its heritage for the future.

Simon Jenkins in his book England's Thousand Best Churches says:

"The true pleasure of Somerset churches lies in the experience of visiting them. They offer the perfection of English building set against the perfection of English countryside."

This could not be more true than in the case of Compton Bishop church set in a tranquil coomb surrounded by the Mendip Hills.

The Need

Old age and the increasing effects of atmospheric pollution means maintenance and repair becomes more frequent and more expensive. Several items require priority attention and top of that list is an immediate requirement to refurbish the church window at an estimated cost of £6,000.

Ken Brown, Priest-in-Charge of St Andrew's, Compton Bishop writes:

We are continuing what has been offered in this place of worship for hundreds of years. To ensure this is sustained for future generations we must meet the challenges to maintain the building.

Becoming a Friend of Compton Bishop Church is an imaginative way to ensure this happens. I commend membership to you, and would also ask you to remember the church, and those who are part of it this generation, in your prayers.
