(03)Gorse [Ulex europaeus]. A spiny evergreen shrub up to 2.5 metres high with almond-scented flowers throughout the year, particularly spectacular during April to June. Often occurs in massive groups in rough grassy places especially on heaths, embankments and downs. Later in the year as most of the seed pods ripen, the pods explode loudly, often to the considerable surprise of the uninformed passer-by.

(04)Tree Mallow [Lavatera arborea]. A woody stemmed biennial covered all over in soft down with flowers in July-September some 5cm across. It frequently occurs in rocky and waste places close to the coast, attaining a height of some 3 metres with a characteristic shape, resembling that of a small tree.

(05)Mouse-ear Hawkweed [Hieracium pilosella]. A perennial common in short turf, 5-30cm in height, with a basal rosette of leaves and long creeping leafy runners. The lemon-yellow flower-heads from May onwards are solitary on long stalks and are often tinged reddish underneath.

(06)Ragwort [Senecio jacobaea]. A biennial, sometimes perennial growing to 1.5 metres. Common on wasteland, roadsides, sand dunes and dry grazing ground. Flowers from June onwards.

(07)Common Rockrose [Helianthemum nummularium]. A native undershrub, in which many forms and colour varieties decorate our gardens, in particular rock gardens/rockeries.      ..... Click on  » footnote  for further details.

(08)Rosebay Willowherb [Epilobium angustifolium]. A vigorous showy perennial, nearly 2 metres tall abundant on waste ground, heaths and woodland clearings, particularly where the ground has been disturbed. Flowers from June to September and later in the autumn the white fluffy seed heads are a familiar sight blowing everywhere. Sometimes referred to as the fireweed, as it is frequently one of the first plants to move into ground, where a fire has taken place.

(09)Field Scabious [Knautia arvensis]. A perennial growing on dry grassland, waste places, hedgerows and roadsides. Grows to about 90cms and flowering from June to September. The flowers, in flattish pincushions are about 4cm across.

(10)Spiny Restharrow [Ononis spinosa]. A perennial similar to restharrow but bushier, non-creeping and has hard sharp prickles. Common on rough ground and in grassy places, especially on limestone. It grows to about 40cm on erect stems and flowers from July to September.
