.....The females are a little larger than the males, with lighter ground colour but the markings are considerably larger and bolder. Usually the males feed and rest with the wings closed whereas the females often bask with the wings spread. The caterpillars feed on grasses at night and hide during the day. They are unusual in that they over winter as either larvae or chrysalises. Consequently, butterflies begin to emerge in March and these produce other generations later in the year often into October or November.
